About DesignsForCharity.com
DesignsForCharity.com was established in 2006 to help to provide information about Kate's first project, the Breast Cancer Ribbon Dress 2006. The Breast Cancer Ribbon Dress 2006 was designed to raise money and awareness for breast cancer, which has directly touched her life. Kate's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, when she was just 6 years old. Thanks to early detection, agressive surgery, and chemotherapy, her mom is now a ten year survivor. Several members of Kate's family, including great aunts and cousins have also been diagnosed with breast cancer.
After developing the concept of the creating a dress partially covered in breast cancer ribbons, Kate came up with the idea of actually using the dress to benefit a breast cancer charity. Ribbons would be sold to raise money. Each ribbon would be inscribed with the name of someone who has had breast cancer. Light pink ribbons honor survivors. Dark pink ribbons memorialize those who have passed. Taking the concept even further, Kate implemented donation levels, with each level receiving a different embellishment on the ribbon. Net proceeds from the ribbon donations will be given to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. After the dress has been completed, it will be auctioned, with proceeds from the auction also going to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Each year, Kate would like to create a new dress to benefit a different charity. Her hope is that she can expand the concept of DesignsForCharity.com to a national level, encouraging young, aspiring designers to create similar projects in their area. These design projects would be featured on the DesignsForCharity.com website.
